Early 20th century artists represented include Auerbach, Nicholson, Hitchen, Bomberg and Moore as well as a growing contemporary collection. The watercolour collections are widely recognised as being of exceptional importance. They are particularly strong in 18th and 19th century watercolours which include works by Paul Sandby, J R Cozens, Thomas Girtin, J M W Turner, David Cox, Samuel Palmer, Edward Lear and J F Lewis. Because of light sensitivity the watercolours are shown in small changing displays throughout the year.

The decorative art collections are extensive and varied. Of particular importance are the collections of locally produced glass, pottery and silver. These are of national importance being large and concentrated holdings include Beilby enameled glass, Newcastle silver, North East pottery, early 19th century creamwares and 19th and 20th earthenwares by Maling pottery.
