The Springfield Honda Newcastle Eagles have swooped to sign 6ft 8in power forward Damien Argrett for the forthcoming season. The Pfeffier University Falcons graduate who can also play in the centre position averaged 19.8 points and 5 rebounds per game during his final year in College.
Player-coach Fab Flournoy has been tracking the progress of Argrett and is excited at capturing the player and is expecting his newest acquisition to make a smooth transition from the College game into the BBL.
"Damien is a solid player who comes from a team that have the same principles as those that I am trying to focus on with Newcastle. He has a good pedigree and I expect him to be an influential member of our team who will settle without too many problems. He can score and is good on all of the fundamentals. More importantly he is someone who can deal with all of those intangibles during a game which isn't always the case with some players."
"I am happy because he has experience of playing on a deep team that rotates it's players regularly. He averaged 20 minutes last year and his production was very good. Having watched him in action on numerous occasions I am impressed with his outstanding work ethic and defensive capabilities. He will fit into our system and style of play without too many problems and that is always something you have to consider as a coach."
"We have done well to retain the core of our team and in the couple of spots where we have needed to find replacements I have had to try as far as possible to ensure they are happy and able play to the same principles. Since we are likely to lose some players when the Commonwealth Games arrive I need to have players who are consistent and in that respect Damien fits the bill perfectly and we look forward to welcoming him to the club."
Managing Director Paul Blake reiterated Flournoy's assessment of Argrett and expects to strengthen the Eagles front-court even further.
He said "Damien is only the first of up to four forwards we are looking to secure for this season, the second being to see the return of Darius Defoe. We will be looking to announce the third player in the very near future. I think Damien will be a great signing for us. He seems to have a good work ethic and already knows our system of play as it is the same as the one he played in College."
