This very colourful town has produce lots of famous people such as the novelist Catherine Cookson and the award winning director Ridley Scott.
It came to fore front with the production of ships and its maritime industries.Famously producing many of the war ships from both the first and the second world war.
Within the vicinity are large parks, and the ruins of a Roman fort rest on Lawe Hill, above the Tyne.
The first unsinkable, self-righting lifeboat, designed by William Wouldhave, was launched from the city in 1790 to help save people at sea and along the vast coast line that stretches up South Shields
Many parts of this area are fantastically beautiful and are now protected by the National Trust, such as The Leas
The Part of the coast homes a very Famous pub. The only pub resturant of its type in Europe. The Grotto is built into the Cliff side of Marsden, and was originally used by smugglers. If you don't like confined spaces watch out for the lift. It is only a short journey but it is tight. This bar is an excellent visit, but on Sundays days it is jam packed with locals and tourists alike.
The Rock facing the pub is world famous for one of the largest sea bird colonies in the uk. The weather and constant battle with the sea means unfortunately some of the rock has started to collapse over recent years.A great bonus for visitors to south shields is the metro, and the ferry. So public transport is rife in the helping hand for tourism ini this area.
