The Gallery houses a fine collection of contemporary craft, oil paintings, applied art, watercolours, and local Gateshead history. Over the last 25 years the venue has become established as a national centre for contemporary craft and has built up one of the best collections outside London - this includes ceramics, wood, metal, glass, textiles and furniture. In 1998 the fine art and craft collections were Designated as being of national importance. The Shipley is now also home to the Craft Council's regional computer terminal Photostore and is the only gallery in the north-east to house such a facility. This easy to use visual database allows visitors to search quickly and easily for contemporary British crafts. Featuring over 900 selected craftspeople and 40,000 images of their work, the database is constantly growing as new makers and images are added.
